In every organization, consists a hierarchical system where it showcases the various levels of position(s) within the company in which it is mostly made up of its employees. Hence, not having employees to work with is like going to war without any firearm – it will certainly not succeed without them.

Are Employees Important?

Employees are among an organization’s most important resources and coined as most valuable assets. The amount of work performed by them will have a direct impact on the productivity of an organization. Although employees may be working for an organization, it is the organization’s responsibility to take care of the well-being of its employees. This is where employee relations play an important role here.

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD, 2018), the term "Employee Relations" is defined as the individual and collective relationships between employers and employees in the workplace. Positive employee relations with high levels of employee involvement, commitment and engagement – can improve business outcomes of the organization.

There are many organizations that perceives the importance of employee relations. However, the one that stands out is Digi Telecommunications.

About Digi Telecommunications

Founded in 1995, Digi Telecommunications is owned by Telenor Group (A Norwegian multinational telecommunications company that is headquartered at Norway). It is a well-established mobile connectivity and internet services provider that enables 11.7 million Malaysians to get the most benefit out of an increasingly connected world (Digi, 2018). Because of their success, communication has been made easier all-around Malaysia with its mobile telephone services, enhanced calling features, broadband, international roaming and other services. They believe that digital communication empowers everyone to improve their lives, build societies and secure a better future for all.

#1 Supportive Environment

Digi’s working environment comes from the angle of employer value proposition, which can be coined in the term “Freedom to Inspire the Next”. They have a culture where they will always be very supportive of their employees and colleagues within the organization in every project that they handle. According to Head of Corporate Strategy in Digi, Foo (2018) said that Digi provides a supportive working environment as well as a very collaborative culture.

#2 Well-Being

Human beings are always entitled to be treated with respect, care and dignity. Digi’s business practices are sustainable because they base relationships on human rights that includes relationships between employees and diversity, cultural and any other differences. For example, Digi practices a policy “Digi’s female employees now get 6-months fully paid maternity leave”. Digi’s chief executive officer, Albern Murty said “It is our goal to attract and retain the best talent, male or female, and we are confident that the revised maternity leave policy will help make Digi a place where women can build careers and play a key role in supporting their families” (Syameen, 2016).

#3 Awards & Recognition

Here at Digi, awards and recognition are one of the best perks of working in this organization. Digi provides recognition for TOP NPS (Net Promoter Score) PERFORMERS in retail centres. Not only that, Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (Digi) was announced the winner of the “Best Malaysian Organisation” category for the LIFE@WORK Awards 2016, which recognizes and celebrates employers who champion diversity and inclusion in their workplace (The Star, 2016).

#4 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

One of the best things about working in Digi is that, I am personally overwhelmed by the involvement of the employees in this organization. In any organization, it's not just about making profits, it's also about giving back to society. For example, employees are encouraged to volunteer and partake in projects like “#ProjectPensel (2015)”.

Previously working with Staedtler Malaysia, Digi decided to give back to society through delivering pencil and colouring pencil sets to selected childcare centres as well as primary schools in Malaysia that were adversely affected by the East Coast flood. It was a very successful outreach that raised support and awareness for the children impacted by the floods.

#5 Training & Development (Mentorship)

With the support of Digi’s top management (CXOs), Digi offers a program called “Digi CXO Apprentice” where young talents can kick start their career by strategizing and bringing ideas to life. Making a big impact in shaping digital content for millions of customers, primarily in Malaysia. Personally, being mentored by professionals in any industry (in this case telecommunication) is the starting point that opens up many windows of opportunities for fresh graduates.

Before You Leave,

These are only some of the beneficial perks that are being offered by Digi Telecommunications. Hence, making it one of the best organizations to work for. Digi has realized the importance of “Employee Relations” by providing a platform and most importantly, encouragement and support to drive their employees towards achieving their goals. With their generous efforts in providing well-equipped facilities and productive environment that practices a culture that is undeniably special, it is definitely hard to resist not working in this company!

“Always treat your employees exactly as you want them to treat your best customers.” - Stephen Covey.
